About Us
The NUS Indian Dance is a part of the Centre For the Arts, NUS. Formed in 1977, it has since attained greater heights under the guidance of its Resident Choreographer, Santha Bhaskar, a pioneer in the Indian Cultural dance scene and a Cultural Medallion winner of Singapore.
The group mainly performs Bharatanatyam, an ancient Indian classical form. Bharatanatyam focuses on the graceful manner and symmetry of the movements, traits that characterise Indian dance as elegant and unfolds the richness of Indian art and culture. NUS Indian Dance has recently started a new Bollywood Dance sub-group in an effort to explore different dance forms. It was launched at the CFA House Party 2010 and was very well received by the public.
The group puts forth two productions each year, some notable recent performances being Anweshana - The Search for Nalanda, Part I (NUS Arts Festival 2010), Vriksha (NUS Arts Festival 2009) and Bhairav (NUS Dance Reflections 2008).
